make the most of your precious mommy-time with bath products that lift your mood and nourish your skin

Bathing Beauty

Amanda Storey

I have been obsessed with bathing for as long as I can remember. I enjoy a refreshing shower as much as the next gal, but my true love is a hot, relaxing bath. When I was a kid, my mom would have to drag me out of the tub after I had read two books and refilled the hot water at least three times.

These days I have to limit my baths to once a week in order to conserve water, so you better believe I am pampering myself when my bath day comes up.

Showers and baths are so much more than basic hygiene. For a new mom like you, they are invaluable, quiet “me time”: time when you can reflect, sing, read, close your eyes, and tap into restored energy for the demands of your new role.  Double down on the benefits of this time by stocking up on products which will both enhance your mood and nourish your skin.

Here are some of my absolute, cannot-live-without bath and shower products.

1. Dr. Bronner Magic Castile Liquid Soap- $15.59

I have sensitive, itchy, rashy skin. Most body washes and soaps really irritate and dehydrate me, but Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap is amazing! I use the Peppermint Castile Liquid Soap and I will never use another brand again. A tiny little handful of soap is more than enough to wash your entire body and shampoo your hair! Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap is said to have more than eighteen different uses but so far I have only washed myself, my hair, and my dog Remi. This soap is glorious and gentle on my moody skin but the best part about it is the peppermint. A peppermint tingle in the morning!  What better way to refresh your skin and feel alive and awake (after perhaps too many mid-night feedings)?

2. Lush Bath Bombs-$5.95 and up

There are few things I love more than tossing a Lush Bath Bomb into my tub. Each bomb is a tiny piece of art that slowly disperses into your warm tub and turns it into a magical, relaxing wonderland. Bath Bombs come in an array of styles, scents, and colors — so feel free to experiment because I have to say I have never been disappointed. Everything from Lush is handmade, 100% vegetarian and not tested on animals. (I must warn you: Lush is also extremely addictive.)

3. Fig + Yarrow Pink Love Salts- $32

I was recently gifted these fragrant salts and they are just lovely. The mineral-rich Himalayan pink salts are scented with aromatic essential oils of patchouli, ylang ylang, bergamot, and orange — and the packaging is precious too. I'm a huge fan of bath salts and this one replaced my former favorite (Dr. Teals Lavender Epsom Salt — unfortunately my husband thinks lavender smells like cat litter.  So that had to go.  But the salts were a fave for a while).

4. The Original Baiden Mitten

This product is a game-changer. Researching the purchase online, I noticed a ton of positive reviews for this exfoliating mitten so obviously I had to try it out. I have had several exfoliating gloves and scrubby towels that do little more than scrape at my skin, so I was skeptical that my dull skin was going to "roll off in sheets" as the reviewers claimed. But I soaked in my tub for 20 minutes, slipped on my Baiden Mitten and followed the instructions. This was unlike any exfoliation I have experienced. My skin and body looked poreless, smooth, and gleaming. Baiden Mitten makes several styles and sizes; I primarily use the face and body mitten version. Everyone needs this product!

5. Benefit Cosmetics Shower Cap - $14

Benefit has been doing some variation of this shower cap for as long as I can remember. Through the years the colors and prints on the cap have changed but one thing has been constant: people love this shower cap. I have waist-length hair and I try to only shampoo it twice a week, so this shower cap saves my life. It's extremely durable, very waterproof, and I can guarantee you will catch your significant other wearing it at some point. If you can get your hands on a Benefit Shower Cap, buy two.

It's been a long week and I finished my article, so I think I will treat myself to a long hot refills.  Any chance your baby is snoozing?  If so, you should take one too!
